How to Deal With Eating Disorder Content on Social Media

  1. Advice
  2. How to Deal With Eating Disorder Content on Social Media

There are many different types of eating disorders, including Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder and OSFED (Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders). Realising and accepting that you have an eating disorder can be really difficult in itself, and trying to navigate content on social media could be triggering for you.

On social media platforms, such as Tiktok, Tumblr, and Twitter, you might come across content or communities that promote or glorify disordered eating. The content is often created by, and made for, people suffering from an eating disorder themselves. A number of social media companies do not tolerate content in regard to eating disorders as they acknowledge the harm it poses to those who access it. They classify this as self-harm content and it can be reported directly to these platforms.

However, social media can be used in a healthy manner to access support and connect with others on your journey - platforms know that eating disorders can feel isolating, and often allow posts when in the context of recovery. If you do this, you should discuss your recovery in a sensitive and considerate manner, whilst being mindful of those who might access the content. For example, you should ensure that you avoid references to any disordered behaviours or rules that you may have once engaged with, as well as any numbers relevant to your disorder such as weights and calorific intake, as this could negatively influence others.

There is plenty of support available to help you, no matter where you are on the path to recovery, should you wish to access it. You deserve to recover and it is possible. Most social media sites, and other online platforms such as BEAT, also contain information about to get help and support for anyone experiencing eating disorders, self-harm or suicidal thoughts, whether it is yourself or someone you care about.
