When the police are investigating an allegation they may need to request more information about users' accounts on specific platforms. Most commonly used social networking sites have specific guidelines for this type of request.

International requests for user information could be made under a MLAT Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) or the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA).
